Company Profile

Michael Jespersen

In early 1995, while working at a fitness equipment store in Richmond, BC, Michael Jespersen noticed that on several occasions customers would ask for reference material on how to do exercises when purchasing dumbbells. “It happened over and over again until one day a light bulb went on over my head. I should put together a little book on how to do dumbbell exercises” explains Mike. With the help of a personal trainer friend, a couple of co-workers as models, brother in-law photographer and a $10,000 loan from his mother, he took a big risk and printed 5000 copies of The Great Dumbbell Handbook.

Dumbbell Handbook

“Fortunately, we managed to sell all 5000 copies in a reasonably short amount of time. I did a direct mail campaign to other fitness equipment stores throughout the US and Canada. They placed small orders and it wasn’t long before they were calling back, looking for more.”

As fortune would have it, he got a long written complaint from a personal trainer that had purchased a copy. The personal trainer went on to explain that one of the exercises was contra-indicated and could promote injury through shoulder impingement. “It was at that point I thought it would be a good idea to get some expert help. I started asking around and Andre Noel Potvin’s name came up a few times and I thought, I need to talk to this guy” said Mike.
Productive Fitness Fitness Posters, Books and DVD's

After meeting, Andre agreed to help and a great business relationship formed. Andre’s keen eye and uncompromising demand for perfection helped to solidify the credibility of exercises and information in The Great Dumbbell Handbook. The next printing was for 10,000 copies and it wasn’t long before Mike was able to pay back his mother.

Given the success of The Great Dumbbell Handbook, Mike created another book in the same format called The Great Body Ball Handbook with exercises on how to use a fitness ball. This book also turned out to be popular and it wasn’t long before they were printing 20,000 copies of each. Other books were added until there were a total of 12 “Great Handbooks” in the series, which have sold over 2 million copies worldwide to date.

In 2002, Productive Fitness began publishing exercise charts and posters. It seemed like a natural extension to the handbooks and the timing was great because books sales started declining a few years later due to the easy access to information on the internet, specifically YouTube. "Fitness posters seemed to be immune since they go on the wall for quick reference" explained Mike. The posters have proved popular and today are the core of the business. In addition to exercise posters, Productive Fitness also has four Fitness DVDs and a host of digital publications, including all the books for iPad and other media devices.
